Chairs and tables spill out of street-side restaurants and bars, innovative museums celebrate the city’s past, and galleries showcase the region’s rich Indigenous art. There is much for you to see and do in and around Darwin.

Day 2 (Wednesday)

Transfer this morning to the Darwin Rail Terminal, where your journey onboard The Ghan begins. Enjoy a light lunch in the restaurant before arriving in Katherine for your Off Train Excursion. Here you can choose to cruise the famous Nitmiluk Gorge or experience the life of the outback, before returning to the train to freshen up. Enjoy a fine wine over dinner as you continue south to Alice Springs. (B,L,D)

Day 3 (Thursday)

Shortly after breakfast, The Ghan arrives in Alice Springs. You will be transferred to your accommodation and the afternoon is yours to explore the sights of this outback town at your leisure. Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, Alice Springs Desert Park or the Telegraph Station. (B)

Day 4 (Friday)

Start your three day adventure of Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. Travel through the beautiful MacDonnell Ranges. Stop at the Camel Farm and learn about the role camels had in opening up Central Australia. Later, stop to view majestic flat-topped Attila (Mt Conner) in the distance before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort rested, relaxed and ready to explore the amazing World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This afternoon travel around the base of Uluru in comfort as your guide provides commentary about the numerous sacred sites and features to be found at Uluru. Continue to the Kuniya Walk where you will be escorted to the beautiful Mutitjulu Waterhole. View ancient Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the Aboriginal and European history of the area. Later visit the Uluru–Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, where you can learn about Aboriginal culture and see Aboriginal arts and crafts. In the late afternoon, travel to the Uluru sunset viewing area. Witness the striking colour changes of Uluru at sunset while enjoying nibbles and a complimentary glass of wine. (B)

Day 5 (Saturday)

Rise early to travel to the Uluru sunrise viewing area. Watch the first rays of the sun set the Red Centre alight while enjoying a warming cup of tea or coffee. Then travel to the mystical 36 domes of Kata Tjuta. On the way, enjoy panoramic views of the southern side of Kata Tjuta before arriving at the base of Walpa Gorge. Spend some time exploring the gorge and the unusual conglomerate rock formations. The walking trail through Walpa Gorge follows the natural creek between two of the tallest domes of Kata Tjuta. Return to Ayers Rock Resort where you may choose to participate in one of the many free activities including guided or self-guided garden walks through the native gardens, bush yarns at the Circle of Sand with a local Aboriginal storyteller, or watch artists work in the Wintjiri Arts and Museum. In the early afternoon, travel through spectacular desert scenery on your way to Kings Canyon Resort. Pass through Curtin Springs cattle station before arriving at Kings Canyon Resort.

Day 6 (Sunday)

This morning, join a guided climb to the rim of Kings Canyon for marvellous views of Watarrka National Park. Follow the rim of the canyon stopping to look down into the canyon gorge at lookout points. Time permitting, you may choose to descend into the green oasis of the Garden of Eden. The rim walk takes approximately three hours to complete and is rocky and steep in parts. It is recommended for those with a good level of fitness. Alternatively, you may wish to take an easier, shorter walk to explore the boulder strewn canyon floor. Stop at Kings Creek Station before travelling through beautiful desert landscapes on your way to Alice Springs and your overnight accommodation.

Day 7 (Monday)

This morning after breakfast, check out of your hotel, or why not extend your stay and experience more of the Red Centre. (B)
