Day 1

After leaving the East Perth Rail Terminal behind mid-morning, journey though the super-scenic Avon Valley over lunch. Further west, enjoy a three-course dinner then disembark for an evening experience in the outback gold-mining town of Kalgoorlie. Travelling prospector Paddy Hannan struck it rich here 1893, sparking the greatest gold rush in Australian history. Visit Hannan’s North Tourist Mine and the amazing Super Pit, where Kalgoorlie’s gold rush continues today. OVERNIGHT: 2 nights Indian Pacific (L,D)

Day 2

After travelling through the night, watch the sunrise over tiny Rawlinna, a remote outpost bordering the largest sheep station in the southern hemisphere. Across the border in South Australia take a wander around Cook, a slightly eerie ghost town that’s home to a thriving population of four. Cook was once a busy railway hub with a bush hospital and more than 50 resident railway workers maintaining the tracks. Your train ride continues into the night, across the mighty Nullarbor Plain. (B,L,D)

Day 3

Rich ochre sands make way for forests and farmlands as you arrive into Adelaide – a true foodie city and the hub of the world-beating South Australian wine industry. Look forward to breakfast on an Off Train Excursion, taking in the city sights, the Torrens River, the marvellous Adelaide Central Market or the hugely popular Adelaide Oval. The rest of the
day is free for you to explore. Cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants abound. OVERNIGHT: 1 night Peppers Waymouth Hotel (B)

Day 4

Make your way to Adelaide Airport for the short flight to Kangaroo Island. On arrival, meet your guide for an introduction to the laidback Kangaroo Island lifestyle: a cuppa with some homemade cakes, and a country stroll through tall eucalyptus trees with koalas snoozing overhead. Travel through rich farming country to the island’s north coast for a guided walk through Lathami Conservation Park. Your delicious bush lunch features King George whiting (local sea fish) and fine South Australian wines. At Seal Bay Conservation Park, get an up-close look at some Australian sealions on a beautiful sandy beach. The remainder of the afternoon is spent exploring the island’s southeast, with destinations and experiences chosen to reflect seasonal opportunities. OVERNIGHT: 1 night Stranraer Homestead (B,L,D)

Day 5

On your second day on Kangaroo Island, explore the highlights and lesser-known backtracks of Flinders Chase National Park – a 326-sq-km wilderness on the island’s western flank. Within the national park, drive through dramatic dune country to Cape du Couedic, where New Zealand fur seals frolic in the surf under impressive Admirals Arch. The Remarkable Rocks are nearby – huge natural granite sculptures carved by relentless wind, rain and Southern Ocean salt. Local wines and produce feature in your bush-picnic lunch. Travel back to Kingscote Airport where your island tour concludes. After touching down back in Adelaide, make your own way back to your hotel. OVERNIGHT: 2 nights Peppers Waymouth Hotel (B,L)

Day 6

Today is yours to experience Adelaide at your own pace – perhaps some shopping in the historic arcades around Rundle Mall or a tram ride to seaside Glenelg for a stroll along the jetty and some fish-and-chips on the sand. In the North Terrace cultural precinct, visit the South Australian Museum and take a tour through the hushed spaces of the Art Gallery of South Australia. Cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants abound. (B)

Day 7

Check out of your hotel after breakfast: one last chance to explore Adelaide before your journey home. (B)
